Let The Joybells Ring is tucked away on a 1967 b-side and towards the end of The Majority Decca Years 1965-68 2009 Rev-Ola cd reissue. This is a soaring pop song with tubular bells and an epic, surprising middle break. Ivor Raymonde is credited with producing and arranging the song, applying his Dusty Springfield and Walker Brothers treatments to the Majority sound with brilliant results. Unfortunately, the song was not a hit for the band and remains on the fringes of 60s pop awareness.

I don't know much about the Spanish band Los Buenos. I originally heard Cancion on a CD compilation and loved it. Like Plant Life, which I posted earlier this month, the sound of Cancion seems to draw some inspiration from the Easybeats, especially during the Sorry-esque vocal gobbledygook finale.

According Eugene Chadbourne in AllMusic, Flower Girl was the only disc recorded by the Orlando, Florida band called Plant Life. Members of the group included George Clark, Scott Boyer and Tommy Talton. Chadbourne noted that it wasn't a hit, but received a bit of local airplay. Although the arrangement owes much to Friday On My Mind by the Easybeats, most notably in the vocal stylings and syncopated guitar riff, the melodic Flower Girl is more inspired than a copy. It's far better than a typical garage rock record. In fact, it sounds as if it were recorded with session musicians and not by a local band. Perhaps it was. Being Easybeats-esque is never a crime, as far as I am concerned.

In celebration of the new Pink Floyd Early Years release, I thought that I'd post a song by a great under-appreciated psych band with lots of material that languished in the vaults for years called Kaleidoscope (UK). By this point, they were confusingly and loftily re-Christened Fairfield Parlour. The group were not nearly as commercially successful as Pink Floyd. Their material was more experimental pop, similar to the best early Floyd singles. Pop is never a slight, as far as I am concerned. Interestingly, critics often dismiss pop as simple, when, in fact, it is the most difficult music to write.

Pink Floyd fans have been eagerly awaiting an archival release of early material for years. Although the CD reissues for Syd Barrett were generous and the CD containing the 1967 Floyd singles were great, the Floyd have been releasing tiny droplets of material since that 1997 CD. The odd instrumental track and Bob Dylan Blues are quite good, but they have not been enough to satiate our appetites.

Black Friday. November 4th, 2015.

Out of nowhere, appears Pink Floyd 1965: Their First Recordings with Syd Barrett, a double 7" boxed set for Record Store Day. 1000 copies are pressed. 4 unreleased songs now available. I am excited. Where do I buy a copy?

A Cavalcade of Bad News

Pink Floyd 1965: Their First Recordings was only available in Europe. This means that folks on my side of the pond had no shot. 4 days later, 4 copies have sold for over $300 on eBay. This was £24 new. I'd prefer to jump for joy, but I'll have to settle for beating my head against the wall (get it?) in frustration. Why such a limited release? A pal noted that this was probably a panicked last minute decision made by the Floyd to extend the copyright on these songs, which will likely run out at the end of the year. That makes sense.

I'd love to own a copy, but not for $300 from a scalper the weekend this was released. It is probable that very few fans were in the right place at the right time to score this one. I hope a few genuine fans paid retail for this. Most didn't and will never be able to. Bummer.

"On Friday, a special limited edition set of two 7" singles was released, featuring previously unreleased Pink Floyd tracks. There were just over 1000 of these sets available. "Pink Floyd 1965 – Their First Recordings" included Lucy Leave, Double O Bo, Remember Me, Walk With Me Sydney, Butterfly and I'm A King Bee. If you weren't one of the lucky ones to come across one of these in your local record store (the only place they were available from), don't worry, Pink Floyd hope to make them available in some physical form towards the end of next year."

I've always preferred radio pop to garage rock. It seems like more people like me have come out of the woods in recent years to share their love of 1960s pop, whether they call it Sunshine Pop, British Invasion & Beat, Freakbeat, Psych Pop, Girl Groups, French Pop, Harmony Pop or Folk Rock. Since I am on my 7th volume of 1960s CD comps, I thought I would start sharing my discoveries in a blog. Man With Money, written and performed by the Everly Brothers, was the first song from my first compilation. It is still as stunning to me today as the first time I heard it. Mike Sin of the Insomniacs tipped me off to an Everly Brothers / Hollies collaboration album called Two Yanks In England. At the time, I had no idea that the Everlys were producing such great work in the mid 1960s. That purchase led me to the Everly Brothers CD boxed set, Heartaches and Harmonies, which I highly recommend. Man With Money, in my estimation, was the jewel of the set. This song epitomizes everything I love about 1960s pop. Beautiful production, great singing, killer playing by seasoned musicians, harpsichord and guts. This was covered by a number of groups, including the Who, Wild Uncertainty and the Eyes, but none of those versions are nearly as good as this one.
