The Lettermen - She Don't Want Me (mono & stereo) from Warm - Capitol (1967)

Song: She Don't Want Me
Writers: Dick Addrisi-Eddie Chandler
Recorded: 1967
Producer: Steve Douglas

My father saw the Lettermen in concert in the early 60s and said that the show was magical. My parents didn't spin them around the house during my childhood, favoring Simon & Garfunkel, the Moody Blues and the Beatles. As a result, my knowledge of the work of the Lettermen is fairly limited. I have been surprised to discover that the Lettermen recorded in some styles outside of the soft harmony pop that they were known for. She Don't Want Me nearly sounds like a Left Banke song, with gorgeous baroque pop touches.

The Four Tops - Wonderful Baby from Reach Out & b-side - Motown (1968)

Song: Wonderful Baby
Writer: Smokey Robinson
Producer: Smokey Robinson
Recorded: 1968

I tend to prefer late 60s / 70s Motown, because the music began to break out of the cookie-cutter production line sound. I had never heard Wonderful Baby until I purchased Phil Spectre - Wall of Soundalikes Volume 2. The entire Reach Out album by the Four Tops is fantastic. It is fun to hear a track that is unjustly obscure from a familiar group.

Kaleidoscope (UK) aka Fairfield Parlour - Broken Mirrors from White Faced Lady - Vertigo *cancelled (1971) - Pilot (1991)

Welcome to the Resurrection Beat Machine! This blog is dedicated to lost 60s pop songs from the US, UK and abroad. Whenever possible, please purchase music and support the artists / labels.

In celebration of the new Pink Floyd Early Years release, I thought that I'd post a song by a great under-appreciated psych band with lots of material that languished in the vaults for years called Kaleidoscope (UK). By this point, they were confusingly and loftily re-Christened Fairfield Parlour. The group were not nearly as commercially successful as Pink Floyd. Their material was more experimental pop, similar to the best early Floyd singles. Pop is never a slight, as far as I am concerned. Interestingly, critics often dismiss pop as simple, when, in fact, it is the most difficult music to write.
